It happened ever so quietly on Wednesday 22 November that all designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) in England and Wales became National Landscapes, including Somerset's Mendip Hills, Quantock Hills, and Blackdown Hills National Landscapes.
The new name, it is said, reflects their national importance; the vital contribution they make to protect the nation from the threats of climate change, nature depletion and the wellbeing crisis, whilst also creating greater understanding and awareness for the work that they do.
You can read all about it on the Somerset Council website by following the link HERE including a quote from Councillor Dixie Darch, Somerset Council's Executive Lead Member for Environment and Climate change, who said, amongst other things;
Call me a Karen or a Barry or whatever the derogatory term is, but I quite liked living near an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Ed
