St David's Day, celebrated today across Wales when citizens wear one or both of Wales's national emblems – a daffodil and a leek.
It's also the first day of spring – according to meteorologists. Spring is usually described as the 'shoulder' period between the coldest and the warmest months, so March, April and May, when conditions are transitioning from winter to summer. We will see a gradual improvement in the weather as we progress through the months towards June and summer, but as we often note, March can be flippin' cold. So hang on to your scarves and gloves for at least the rest of this month.
And what about those rabbits? Why do we – or at least some of us – say 'rabbits' three times on the first day of the month? Or alternatively 'white rabbits'.
Superstition has it that repeating 'rabbits' three times as the first thing you say on the first day of the month means you'll have good luck before the month is out. Or a present by the end of the day by those more driven by mercenary considerations!
Its origin is unknown, but it is generally held to be associated with the broader belief that rabbits signify good luck – hence the carrying of a rabbit's foot for luck.
