Somerset Roads That Will or Won't Be Gritted

Somerset County Council has released it Precautionary Road Gritting map and location of South Somerset salt bins and bags.

The council is cutting back on its precautionary gritting programme as part of ongoing cuts, 180 miles of roads across the county that were previously treated will not be this winter.

It has published a map showing which routes routes will be covered in grit as a precaution when temperatures drop below 1C this winter — about 720 miles in total.

The council estimates that it can generate £120,000 in savings by cutting these routes.

Also included is a South Somerset map of salt bins and bags, which shows the location of the salt bin on Red Hill. Curiously there are proposals to remove all roadside salt supplies over the winter to save £40,000, including the one on Red Hill.
