Take a walk to Burton Pynsent Monument

Search for the oldest dated carving.
Find the Taunton Schoolteacher's name.
Or just admire the stunning views.

Did you know?

The 140 feet (43 m) Burton Pynsent Monument was built in 1767.

It was designed by Capability Brown.

Supposedly Pynsent was grateful to William Pitt for opposing a ten shilling tax on a hogshead of cider (1763 Cider Bill), so on his death he left his entire estate to Pitt. But is that true?

In June 1948 it was reported that a cow climbed up the 172 steps to the top of the monument. She was happily returned safely to her pasture.
