Race to the Grange

What a great job these chaps are doing!

Michael Bastable (pictured) and Richard Wilkins are between them clearing the path between Curry Rivel and Langport to make it a safer route for pedestrians, pushchairs and mobility scooters. It is a narrow path to begin with, made worse by lack of action by Somerset County Council who state on their own website :

"We are responsible for maintaining the highway, including pavements and footways. Trip hazards on pavements are a key concern at all times, while weeds, standing water and ice are more seasonal."

Or how about:

"When we decide on priorities for maintaining footways we make sure that opportunities are taken to help social inclusion, particularly improving accessibility for older and disabled people, and people using prams and pushchairs."

Hmm. I don't see much evidence of SCC living up to their claims, do you?

In the absence of a proper bus service (oh, oh, I'm straying onto another soapbox here!) prams and pushchairs regularly use this route between Curry Rivel and Langport. The work Michael and Richard are doing increases the width of the path by a good 30-40 cms or more (12"+ for the dinosaurs amongst us who were schooled before life went all decimal!).

To the best of my knowledge, Richard has been working on this since at least March this year in all weathers and frankly I can't decide which is the worst – driving rain or today's lovely bright sunshine. Whichever, the speed of cars along this stretch makes it a distinctly hazardous and unpleasant job. So well done and thank you to both of them for tackling this mammoth task.

Mercifully, The Grange is now in sight!
