Burton Pynsent Monument

Oh commanding belvedere with shaft rising
Atop a platform and four windows capped by urn and finial
Entry Pedestal pierced by entrance doorway
With steel door firmly shut.

Thrusting rocketlike into Curry Rivel skies
Piercing a West Sedge Moor levels ridge.
William Pitt, the Elder, did commission thee
Capability Brown by design did build this obelisk.

Thy iron railing skirt is now gone
Perhaps to dance and dart above thee in a Spitfire dogfight.
Your surface spalling, crumbling, abrasions, cracks and splits
but stands against it's condition, vandalism and the Cider Tax.
