NEWS from PCSO Ian ROSS 8483 DOMESTIC FUEL THEFTS

People living in rural areas are being warned to look after their domestic oil tanks and be on the lookout for both fuel theft and faulty tanks. With the price of heating oil on the rise, criminals are targeting domestic oil tanks. The tanks are often located in quiet areas and loss of fuel in this way can make a big dent in householders’ finances. The Environment Agency is advising those who use domestic heating oil to regularly inspect their oil tank for leaks or damage. A visual inspection and checking that taps and valves are locked/secure should become a regular part of your household maintenance. You should also check that you have appropriate insurance cover to meet the costs of cleaning up pollution should damage or vandalism occur. If you have been the victim of heating oil or other fuel theft, or have any information relating to fuel theft call the police on 0845 4567000

Top tip • Make fuel tanks hard to access by using sturdy fencing or covering it in a thorny hedge • Ensure the oil tank is well lit, covered by CCTV and if possible locate it so it is visible from the house • Use a remote oil level gauge that can sound an alarm if there is a sudden drop in oil level

HOME SECURITY Now that the warmer weather and lighter nights are here, please be conscious when leaving windows open when you go out, when asleep and also when you are working in your gardens, open windows makes properties insecure and a golden opportunity for would be thieves and burglars. There has been a spate of burglaries in dwellings, in some cases the property has been entered through an insecure opening. Please take some time out to re-address and review your home security, if you need further advice please refer to our website or contact PCSO Ian ROSS.
