Arguably one of Curry Rivel’s best kept secrets, Pynsent Youth Football Club is on a mission -  to provide the opportunity to all local 7 – 12 year olds who want to enjoy and play football here in the village.

Pynsent used to run both adult and junior teams at Westfield for a number of years, but when the adult team folded some 4 years ago, there was a real danger that the club would shut its doors.  At one stage in 2008, the club was down to just nine registered 10 year old players, and it was at that point that a group of local parents decided to take control and develop a safe and enjoyable place for youth football right here on our doorstep.

Two years on, and with the kind support of the Parish Council, SSDC and most particularly the Somerset Community Foundation, the club has managed to provide year-round training and competitive matches for children under the age of 12, and is now looking to move the club to a more stable and sustainable level.

Club Chairman Graeme Crosbie comments, “We are really lucky in the village to have not only a really good facility for football at Westfield, but also a small but strong core of volunteer parents who make it all happen.   The most important aspect of Pynsent FC for us is in giving the opportunity for all children to really enjoy their football.  We aim always to provide a fun, supportive and of course safe environment to train, but also understand that it is just as important for all the kids to be involved in matches and enjoy the competition that provides.  We find many children drop out of sport, especially football, as they move up the age groups, because for whatever reason they find themselves “making up the numbers” or consistently on the subs’ bench.  Our ethos is to give everyone a fair slice of the pie – participation and engagement is more important than winning at all costs.”

The club is now in discussions with the Parish Council to make significant improvements to the facilities at Westfield,  and is working with the school and  other local youth organisations to promote football once more within Curry Rivel and surrounding villages.

The club trains every Thursday evening from 6.30 – 7.30 (exc school holidays) down at Westfield, under the guidance of an FA qualified coach.  Training is open to all boys and girls from 7 -12 years old who want to enjoy playing football and want to improve their skills and knowledge of the game, and cost just £1 per child.
