FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY – The sun shone …..the smoke from the sizzling burger and hot dog stall swirled around ….the vintage cars gleamed in the afternoon light ….the dogs in the annual show yelped excitedly-and the villagers turned out in force.
A village fete is one of our country’s great traditions and it was lovely to see young and old from the village embracing it at Curry Rivel. Many of the stalls were our old favourites (if it isn’t broken why mend it?) so we were able to replenish our book supplies –buy some splendid plants at great prices-pick up that “car boot style” bargain –and of course win some prizes at the ever popular sideshows. There was always something happening –Nicky Barker’s Somerset All Sorts got the afternoon going with a lovely dance routine combining young and old. What a shame that Government cuts meant that this was probably their last ever public performance.Throughout the fete we enjoyed live music from the Roz Cuthbert Duo and mixed that with an eclectic mix of tunes from DJ Peter “Tony Blackburn” Barker. Crowds gathered around 3pm for the Annual Dog Show –with record entries and it was expertly marshalled by our friends from Wood Drove Kennels. Serious classes mixed with fun entries. But not all took place on the green itself –the cream teas and cakes did a roaring trade in the Vicarage and for those who wanted an oasis of calm the flower display in the church were quite superb. A short walk on also gave those interested a chance to see the developments with the Old School Room. Perhaps the testament to its success is not only the excellent sum of money raised but the fact that many were still present as the clock ticked onto 5pm. So as the stalls were dismantled and weary stall holders wended their way home we should all raise a glass to John De Ronde and his excellent team for all their hard work. The challenge next year is to be bigger and better-Olympic theme anyone? Add this page to your favorite Social Bookmarking websites |
