‘Is it always sunny in Curry Rivel’? asked one of our French twinning visitors from Chevilly when visiting in April.
Well as it happens the weather is usually good when the Chevilly coach pulls into the car park for the twinning weekend and this year was no exception. A smaller than usual group of French friends arrived to be entertained and generally fussed over by members of the twinning association; old friends were greeted and introductions made over bacon baps and hot coffee prepared and served by Anne Hembrow and Frances Kitchen, local culinary queens who shared the village hall kitchen facilities very amicably! Guests were then taken to their accommodation and entertained by their hosts. A visit to A&E was narrowly missed when one of the two teenagers staying with the Deacons conducted a rather poor golf shot and drew blood from his friend’s chin, an incident captured on film by the victim who had been standing a touch too close with his camera! In the evening French and English gathered in the village hall for an evening of Irish music performed by Diaspora and an excellent hog roast meal supplied and prepared by Briffett Butchers. The local Guides were drafted in to act as waitresses, clearing plates and washing up, which they did with great efficiency and enthusiasm. It was a fun evening and everyone went home for a well earned rest.Sunday dawned bright and sunny; just perfect weather for a trip on the River Dart from Dartmouth to Totnes. The coaches took us to Paignton where we boarded the steam train for the short ride to Kingsbridge. There is a station at Dartmouth but no track, because Brunel built the station before receiving permission to build the railway, a permission which was not granted. The ferry takes the train passengers across the river to Dartmouth and it was from here after lunch that we embarked the ferry to take us for a very relaxing, guided voyage up the Dart to Totnes. The sun shone and although the ferry captain’s commentary was amusing, some members of the group were spotted dozing on the deck. Too much joie de vivre at lunchtime probably! The evening was spent with hosts and the teenage boys, who were more interested in quantity than quality pronounced the Yorkshire puddings served with their beef as ‘excellent’ which is praise indeed coming mouth of a Frenchman. The French coach driver had trouble getting out of bed the next morning, little wonder when you know what the menu chez Hunts had comprised the previous evening. Christmas pudding in April! After the obligatory group photo by the coach everyone said their goodbyes and the coach disappeared around the corner leaving the English to reflect on a good weekend. But the Twinning Committee never sleeps and the new season’s fundraising events will be formulated this summer and details advertised in the Curry Rivel News in the August edition. Join in and enjoy the benefits of being part of this very sociable village organisation. Add this page to your favorite Social Bookmarking websites |
