In October, at the age of 77, Margaret Young will be the oldest person by 5 years taking on the challenge of the ‘St Margaret’s Hospice Great Walk’, 80 km (50 miles) along the Great Wall of China. The walk is one of the highlights of St Margaret’s 30th year and will be raising much needed funds for this Somerset charity.

Margaret, who has lived in Somerset for some 15 years and in Curry Rivel for 18 months, was persuaded by the manageress of the hospice shop in Somerton, where she volunteers every week, to join her in this adventure. Walking the Great Wall is a stern challenge with many thousands of steps set on the top of high mountains.  The trek is not for the faint hearted and training is recommended. Margaret has been walking everyday with her little dog around the village, but confesses to being a little concerned by the number of steps she will be faced with on the Wall, as she lives in a bungalow, which gives her no opportunity to practice! The accommodation en route is in simple guest houses used by local people where the fare is also simple, consisting of anything you like so long as it’s rice!

The cost of the trek is £3,000, 50% of which covers travel and accommodation with the remainder donated to the charity. If you would like to help Margaret raise funds she would be very pleased to see you at a Tea Party which she is holding on Wednesday 1 September at 2.30 to 5.30 in her garden at ‘Fircroft’ on the main road in the village (behind the red/brown painted wall opposite Parsonage Farm field). There will be cream teas, a cake stall and bric-a-brac to purchase, come rain or shine.

For any further information please contact Margaret on 01458 253077.
