Somerset Scouts are excited and thrilled to be able to canoe on the River Parrett again after about a 3 year absence.

Levels Scouts were the first Somerset Scouts back on the river with two weeks of canoeing in June.  They were followed by Levels Explorers who canoed for 4 weeks as training for an overnight canoe expedition on the Taunton/Bridgwater Canal during summer camp at the end of July.  Six of the Explorers now have a 2 year training plan to be able to complete a Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expedition by canoe in 2012.

Langport has had an established Scout Canoe Centre for many years, however, access to the water has not been possible for about the last 3 years.  Following help from the Environment Agency, Langport River Group, Langport Waterlinks Project and other local groups and friends, Somerset Scouts are back canoeing on the River Parrett.  The Environment Agency donated wood for new canoe steps near the footbridge by the Visitors Centre so that Scouts and others can gain access to the river more easily.  Somerset Scouts are also pleased to have found a new local instructor and manger for their canoes – who is proving to be an asset and was amazing teaching scouts who had never canoed before.

To be involved with any section of the Scout Group please contact Jane Redfearn on 01458 252813.
